Calling all Anime Fans

Hey guys, I think it’s reasonable to assume that all the visitors (however many of those who are still faithful to me) do watch anime. I have a small request from you guys.

Once again, best picture I could find, I really don't have a life

Yeah, as mentioned before, I am now the new president of my school’s anime club. Well, yeah…as the president I will need to decide on what to show next year. Seeing as I spent most of time the previous two years studying, I haven’t had much chance to watch anything (and anything I did watch I watched with the club, so that’s no help).

So yeah, I do have a few things I’d like to address about your suggestions though. I’m mostly looking for movies and OVAs, short stuff that can be shown in the end of a night. As far as shows go, I’m hoping for suggestions of shows that are Halloween themed and romance themed (bonus if manly tears can be shed, by the audience that is). Yeah, I’m sorry if I’m imposing too much ridiculous rules and stuff, but it’s been a really long day and I’m just not short of responsibilities.

So yeah, your help is very much appreciated. There’s just no shortage of crap for me to worry about…

  1. Sky Crawlers, Evangelion 2.0 or 1.0, Durarara (check out crunchyroll for permissions)… not much that I can think of 3AM in the morning when I have classes at 9:30AM. Will think of more when I get the chance.

  2. Summer Wars was a good movie. Uhhh I guess you can lurk 4chan for a couple minutes if you really run out of ideas. Haha

  3. Congratz on your presidency! Almost like Kanji Sasahara.

The Girl who Leapt Through Time is great… possibly some manly tears. May have to get permission from Bandai Ent though. Cencoroll might be good for Halloween, but it’s only 30 minutes and it’s kinda strange… I always recommend Read or Die OVA to anyone because it’s got a really good action sequences. Maybe the Clannad movie too.

It’s funny because I haven’t really watched a lot of anime movies/OVAs lately. I’ve always been watching series, so it’s hard to recommend short ones. If your audience can brush aside a little bit of fan service then I’d recommend a long series like To Aru Kagaku no Railgun. I’ll add on some more if I remember anything else. Good luck Kaichou!

  4. Baccano’s only 16 episodes if you include the ovas. It’s dark enough for Halloween stuff, I think. If this is a high school club, make sure your advisor’s alright with the, uh gore in it. To go with the Halloween theme, Ghost Hunt has short arcs so it shouldn’t be a hassle to just show one. ISome episodes of Mushishi and Kino no Tabi are pretty disturbing and their episodes stand alone so that’d also work for random things at the end of a day.

Honey & Clover’s definitely good for some romance. Clannad as well. I second Toki o Kakeru Shoujo. I also recommend the movie Tokyo Godfathers.

  5. For Halloweenish stuff, Mononoke or Hakaba Kitaro. The former is organized into self-contained two- or three-episode arcs. (It’s a sequel to the “Bakaneko” arc of Ayakashi — Samurai Horror Tales, also worth considering.) The latter is sufficiently episodic that viewers won’t feel left hanging after watching just two or three episodes.

  6. I agree with tony with Summer Wars! Its a really good movie. I also should suggest Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Ponyo! FUKKEN MANLY TEARS. LMAO

Also, im president of my high school’s anime club!! lmao XD lol

  7. Thanks for the input this far. I can’t say much currently since I’ve still got a bunch of MCAT practice questions to do.

One thing is, I can’t show Miyazaki films, I’ve seen Ponyo, I loved it (though the person who saw it with me thought it was cheesy). Problem is, Disney (or whatever division under Disney that licenced the anime films) are pricks and won’t give us permission to show any of them, and they’ll even bring lawsuits (it happened, seriously).

  8. I remember when our club tried to get permissions, we end up having the option to show Ponyo for a fee of IIRC… $135 >_< We didn't show it at the end.

  9. Both Gurren Lagann movies, they are epic

  10. Great. My campus does not even have an anime club, and it’ll probably will never have one organised. I’m in a private medical university where you see lots of 4-eyed bookworm nerds. Otakus are pretty much rare species in my campus. =.=

  11. If you want tears or something like that, then try Five Centimeters Per Second.
It might make the girly otakus cry, its a really good anime [movie] though.
Pretty awesome graphics and is very touching. Really makes you think where you wanna go in life.
    Good luck being president (:

  12. @daowlies: the permissions for 5cm per second in North America are unavailable because the licensing company does not exist anymore. This means we have no way of contacting them for permission. Also, due to legal issues, we cannot show things that we do not have permission for.

  13. Beyond the Clouds and Voices of a Distant Star were two good anime movies.

  14. @Robostrike; I guess thats a shame, it was a really good movie too :(
Hmm I think the Anime President here will come up with something though, there’s a ton of good anime out there :D
    Keep at it! :)

  15. Saikano is very sad. I cried.

  16. The 7 movies of Kara no Kyoukai – what’s ultimately a love story set amidst grisly murders, suicides and supernatural happenings. Being set in the Nasuverse may/may not be a plus.

  17. Though I’m not sure how Halloween themed it actually is because I’ve yet to watch it, Murder Princess is an OVA you might want to look into.

  18. If you can overlook the Halloween theme, give “Summer Wars” a try. It’s a movie that got 6 awards at TAF 2010.

  19. grave of the fireflies is really drama heavy, from ghibli.

  20. K-on. it may not be a movie or OVA, but it sure as hell is awesome.

  21. Movies I recommend:
    + Any Shinkai Makoto Movies
    + Evangelion 1.0
    + Evangelion 2.0
    + Summer Wars
    + Tales from Earthsea
    + Toki o Kakeru Shoujo

  22. most recommended movie

KARA NO KYOUKAI Garden of Sinner

    it’s just perfect

  23. a bit late, but kara no kyoukai is good movie too. sure the story might not be as easily understandable as others but the animation qulaity and music is top notch

  24. As Yoshi-kun pointed out, if the theme could be overlooked, Gurren Lagann is a good choice. Howl’s Moving Castle, The Girl who Leapt through Time and Summer Wars are also great choices.

  25. Bakemonogatari is a must see. It has a great witty dialogue in between the action that it has. So that is what I would recommend. Sorry this is late, but I just found out about your site.

  26. By the way, how does getting permissions work? Do you get copies from the publishers? We dont have an anime club so I have no idea of the hoops you have to go through to show shows lol

  27. I’m probably really behind in answering this since I just bumped into this blog…^_^

    Paprika was awesome…good psychological stuff..
Summer Wars was cool too..an anime movie anyone can relate to…especially now that social networks are such a big part of human existence.

The Girl Who Leapt Through time
    5 cm per second
and of course..all Hayao Miyazaki movies…

  28. oh yeah..congratulations on becoming president! or should I say…bad luck for you..lol..it’s really hard to be president…I was president of our anime club too…boy am I glad that’s over….
