Fate/EXTRA, Fate Project continued

It seems TYPE-MOON’s Fate Project is not ending with Fate/Unlimited Codes Portable. Yet another title will be added into its filed. This time things are more fresh as the game will not be a pure visual novel like the original nor will it be a fighting game like Fatal/Fake and Fate/Unlimited Codes. Fate/EXTRA will be an RPG intended for the PSP.

However, whoever named the game was not aware that Fate/EXTRA is already currently in use. There is a custom map in Warcraft 3 that’s called Fate/EXTRA, unfortunately all the tool tips disappear when you run the game in English and players are left bamboozled at what to do.

My bad, had the name wrong.

The game will depart from general Fate/JRPG convention and allow the player to select the protagonist’s gender; otherwise series mainstays such as Saber and Rin will be making their inevitable appearances.

Gameplay itself is apparently a dungeon crawling battle game with school segments, a formula which will doubtless be familiar from certain other titles.

The main character (you) will not be Shiro, he/she will be a male/female character named [insert name here]. You may also have noticed that the style of characters have changed (possibly not making people run for the bathroom at first sight of Shinji). They said it will be an RPG, but I don’t it from the screenshots/pictures. Maybe someone can explain to me how it works over in Japan.

Personally, I’m not liking the new design. Saber in red just doesn’t look right (Lancer on the other hand looks as badass as ever). That said, the game is only 60% done so there’s still plenty of time/space for changes. I am thinking of getting a PSP because of Valkyria Chronicles 2, if I like what I see (and I get that project for the summer), I’ll definitely be getting this.

  1. hmmm… Saber in red looks cool to me, but she just looks like a completely different character. With familiarity in mind, it doesn’t seem like a good decision to change her appearance like that, even though it’s been done with Saber Lily. Perhaps if this version of Saber was introduced in a better light rather than simply “out of the blue”, it would have worked better.

Or maybe it’s because this Scarlet Saber’s attire looks too similar to the blue version… if the design was more vastly different like Saber Lily’s is, then red would look pretty awesome.

I’m a little disappointed that Unlimited Codes was PSN only for the North American release… I want my physical copy!!

  2. Hmm, I didn’t know about the FATE/EXTRA Warcraft 3 map, but I play Fate / Another quite often, and I’ve heard of an english hero defense map, Fate Heaven.

If you want to view the tooltips, unit names and other such assorted stuff you’ll have to change your Warcraft 3’s font to one that supports the language of the map, eg. Arial Unicode MS, which works for most languages. This can be accomplished with various tools, personally I use Diablolic Warcraft 3 Tools to accomplish this.

  3. Hey I stumbled upon your blog and I am glad I did, great content you have here! I have an anime/asian movie blog and would be honored if I could have a spt on your blogroll! Thanks, and keep up the great work!

  4. I am not used to seeing Saber in red – it looks like a pallate change rather than giving it a new change exactly.

Singleplayer RPG? I still have no idea how this one works exactly. Hopefully we’ll get to know more later.

  5. do you have bigger scan? I saw saber wear a nice dress there !!

  6. @Radiant: That’s exactly what I think. Saber Lily worked becaue it’s an entirely different costume.

    @D: D’oh, my bad. Yeah, it’s Fate/Another. I’ll give that addition a shot, thanks.

@Cello: sorry for the late reply, my life is hectic right now. I’ll add you soon.

@Q: I’m rather skeptical about that as well. Right now the screenshots don’t reveal anything, we’ll have to wait for further news.

@moemoekyun: Click on the image, it’s pretty big.

  7. Pretty cool. I’m not quite used to a red Saber, but what the hell, she looks cool.
The gameplay really reminds me of Persona.

  8. Saber in red isnt doing it for me.
It simply looks like they swapped blue with red to have a reason to sell another Saber figure wich inevitably will pop up.

I dont own a PSP and well dont understand japanese either so I wont look further into the matter.

  9. Ugh…I hate what they did with Saber, personally. They’ve gone out of their way to appeal to the easily aroused. One of the things I really miss is her armour; I’m hoping it gets better, but with the heels on the boots, the absence of the greaves…I liked Saber more when they didn’t try to sex her up.

I’ll be passing out on this one, thanks.
